Why do you want to be an HR business partner rather than a specialist in areas such as recruitment or payroll?
I am drawn to the mix of people understanding and business thinking. A partner sees the whole picture, so I could help managers solve problems that involve hiring, performance and development together, not just one process. I respect specialist work and expect to rely on those colleagues, but I enjoy advising and building relationships. I would also be realistic that I need to learn the basics first, so I would welcome working across several HR areas early in my career.
Tell me about changing a senior stakeholder's view with evidence.
Pick a real example where a senior person disagreed with you. Describe the situation and what the stakeholder believed. Explain how you built trust first, for example by listening and understanding their goals. Then show the analysis you used, made simple and fair, and how you shared it privately before any big meeting. Say what decision followed and what changed. Add what you learned about respecting their view while sticking to the facts.
A retailer's profit declines while revenue rises. How would you structure the investigation?
Start with the profit formula so the problem is clear. Profit equals revenue minus costs, so ask what is going wrong. On the revenue side, check whether prices have fallen, whether volumes changed and whether the mix has moved to lower-margin products. On the cost side, split variable costs like stock, delivery and discounts from fixed costs like rent and staff. Compare each against past periods and competitors, find the biggest driver and suggest next steps.
How do you ensure recommendations survive after the consulting team leaves?
Plan for the handover from day one. Make sure a client leader owns each recommendation, with clear roles. Involve the client team in the work so they understand it and can run it. Train people and leave simple tools and guides. Agree a few measures that show progress and who will review them. Then plan a gradual transition, with support calls or a check-in after we leave, so the change keeps going.
